How to bridge ETH to Base
Base is Coinbase's Ethereum L2 built on the OP Stack. ETH is the native gas asset (no separate token like ARB or POL). The official bridge at bridge.base.org handles deposits but enforces ~7 days for withdrawals via the OP Stack fraud-proof window. Symbiosis routes both directions instantly through Octopools AMM.
Connect your EVM wallet. MetaMask, Coinbase Wallet, Rabby, or Trust Wallet. Same 0x address works on Ethereum and Base.
Select source. Pick Ethereum and ETH as the source.
Select destination. Choose Base and ETH. The destination is your connected wallet automatically.
Review the quote. Verify the ETH output on Base, Symbiosis fee, and confirmation time. Base block time is ~2 seconds.
Confirm and sign. Sign the Ethereum source transaction. ETH lands on Base ready for Aerodrome, Uniswap V4, Friend.tech, Aave, or Coinbase Pay-linked apps.

About ETH to Base route
ETH to Base is an EVM-to-EVM L2 transfer where ETH stays as gas — no token conversion is needed. The cohort using this route is moving into Base ecosystem (Coinbase-aligned dApps, growing meme/social apps, Aerodrome liquidity, Coinbase Pay) without the OP Stack 7-day exit lock.
Base gas costs in 2026 typically run $0.01–$0.05 per transaction. Coinbase Pay integration also lets US users on/off-ramp directly. For a deeper comparison of how Base bridging stacks up against alternatives, see the 2026 ETH bridge comparison.
Other ETH routes
ETH → Arbitrum — cheap EVM rollup with the largest L2 DeFi ecosystem
ETH → Polygon — native POL for low-fee EVM apps

01
Why use Symbiosis instead of bridge.base.org?
The official Base bridge (bridge.base.org) is free for deposits but enforces ~7 days for withdrawals back to Ethereum, due to the OP Stack fraud-proof window. Symbiosis routes both deposits and withdrawals through liquidity pools, settling under a minute in either direction. The cost is a small Symbiosis protocol fee versus a 7-day capital lock.
02
Is ETH on Base a different token than ETH on Ethereum?
No — ETH on Base is real ETH used as native gas, identical in role to ETH on Ethereum mainnet. There's no separate "Base ETH" token. When you bridge ETH from Ethereum to Base, you receive ETH on Base 1:1 (minus fees), and it pays for transactions on Base directly. Bridging back gives you mainnet ETH again.
03
How long does ETH to Base bridging take through Symbiosis?
End-to-end typically 30–90 seconds: Ethereum source confirmation (12–60 seconds based on congestion) plus Base block time (~2 seconds). Compared to ~10 minutes via official deposit and 7 days for native withdrawal, this is much faster for active capital flows.
04
Do I need a separate Coinbase account to use Base?
No. Base is permissionless — any EVM wallet works (MetaMask, Rabby, Trust Wallet, Coinbase Wallet itself). Coinbase built Base but doesn't require a Coinbase account. The Coinbase Pay integration is optional and only relevant if you want fiat on/off-ramps from inside dApps. Symbiosis bridging itself is fully non-custodial and doesn't touch Coinbase infrastructure.
05
How much does it cost to bridge ETH to Base?
Costs include Symbiosis protocol fee (shown upfront in the quote) plus Ethereum source gas. In 2026 conditions Ethereum gas for a bridge transaction runs $1–$15 typical (with congestion spikes possible). Base destination delivery is included. Routing to Arbitrum can offer comparable economics if you need different DeFi exposure.
06
Do I need to add Base to MetaMask manually?
Most modern wallets auto-prompt to add Base on first interaction. To add manually: Network Name = Base, RPC = https://mainnet.base.org, Chain ID = 8453, Currency Symbol = ETH, Explorer = https://basescan.org. Or one-click via Chainlist.org. Same 0x address works on both Ethereum and Base.
07
What can I do with ETH after bridging to Base?
ETH on Base powers gas plus the growing Base DeFi ecosystem: Aerodrome (largest Base DEX), Uniswap V4, Aave V3, Moonwell (lending), Friend.tech, Morpho, BaseSwap. Many Base-native social and consumer apps also use ETH for transactions. The ecosystem is heavily Coinbase-aligned, with regular Coinbase Pay integrations across dApps.
08
Can I bridge ETH back from Base to Ethereum without waiting 7 days?
Yes — Symbiosis runs Base→Ethereum routes through liquidity pools, settling in under a minute regardless of the OP Stack 7-day fraud-proof window. You pay protocol fee + destination gas but skip the week-long capital lock. Useful for active traders moving between L1 and L2 frequently.
